Oh là là! I absolutely LOVED this book! Monsieur Mustard is a tiny, charismatic detective and a very natty dresser. He’s arrived in Bath from Paris and is immediately involved in solving a missing persons case. Well, actually, it’s a snake that’s gone missing: restaurant owner, Fabio Fangtooth. Monsieur Mustard must visit the crime scene, gather clues and speak to witnesses. He soon acquires an assistant, Mobbsy Slewfoot, the ‘rodent of mystery’ and also finds himself variously helped and hindered by the pigeon police force. All of this makes for a highly entertaining story and one which I know will go down a storm with young readers.
The book’s format is spot on too. It’s a brilliant and highly engaging combination of graphic novel and illustrated fiction, making it super accessible and fun. Text and illustration are combined to great effect on the page and the use of mustard as the spot colour, alongside the black and white, is inspired.
Delightfully, the book is peppered with French phrases and I think my new exclamation of choice will henceforth be “Grandes saucisses de Paris!” Added to this, there’s much nervous farting (all wonderfully amusing), a raucous baboon fight and a colourful cast of supporting characters. Throw in some red herrings and unexpected twists and you’ve got all the ingredients for a daring detective story.
Funny and visually fabulous, Monsieur Mustard is a brie-illiant addition to the kids’ mystery genre.
