Brave Dave by Giles Andreae & Guy Parker-Rees

Published by Orchard Books, an imprint of Hachette Children’s, 2022.

Picture book dream team Giles Andreae and Guy Parker-Rees (of Giraffes Can’t Dance fame) team up again for Brave Dave, an empowering picture book about two sibling bears, Dave and Clarence.

Dave is in awe of his older brother Clarence – he’s big, brave and strong, all the things that Dave thinks a grizzly bear should be. How Dave wishes he could be more like Clarence until, one day, Dave discovers that bravery comes in different guises and that this grizzly bear doesn’t need to be more Clarence, he needs to be more Dave!

The book shares a hugely important message about self-acceptance and being proud of who you are. It celebrates difference and individuality, and is gloriously inclusive.

The illustrations are wonderfully cheerful and vibrant – full of the colours of the rainbow. There’s a terrific cast of animal characters and Dave, in particular, is especially cute.

Brave Dave is uplifting and positive and shows children that life is happier when you’re true to yourself and doing what makes your heart sing.
