The Song Walker published this week. It’s an extraordinary book and a breathtaking read: the descriptions of the Australian outback are breathtaking, I held my breath during the incredibly tense action scenes, and I actually almost forgot to breathe as the story drew to a close and Zillah Bethell delivered the most unexpected of twists. Truly remarkable storytelling. Ending this year as I intend the new year to look: with more time for reading and relaxing. I started a new job in September and it’s been all-consuming and left me with very little time to read 😔 I’ve been in a reading slump and neglected my blog. I’m determined to kickstart my reading again and what better way than by finishing this magical, moving tale set in wartime Birmingham and Shropshire. @kateinneswriter @mindforestbooks Enter my #giveaway to be in with the chance of winning this fabulous compendium of modern bedtime stories. Human Kindness, True Stories of Compassion and Generosity that Changed the World is a very special picture book. It explores in depth the notion of kindness and gives some substance and context to human compassion (which has recently been rendered a bit bland and meaningless by the Be Kind movement). The book is nuanced and thoughtful, considering the many aspects of what it means to be kind. There’s a fascinating historical perspective, an exploration of acts of kindness around the world, and suggestions of ways we can commit to an act of kindness each day. The book also looks at how we can be kind to the planet, and how we can practice self-care and self-compassion (something we often overlook). There’s a really fascinating comparison of different faiths’ attitudes to kindness and it’s eye-opening to see just how closely aligned different religions are in this regard.
