This first book in a new graphic novel series is actually two books in one: Bad Air Day and Mission Un-Poppable. These pun-tastic titles set the tone for the books as each story is absolutely packed with hilarious puns. Plus butt and fart jokes. Naturally. There are also lots of witty references to modern pop culture. The books are really funny with gag after gag and I know they’re going to be a massive hit in my classroom this year.
The books are set in the Have A Great Spray waterpark where we meet Flamingo, Cactus, Lynn Lilo, Donut and Watermelon – five inflatable pool float friends who live in an almost-forgotten pool next to the Lost-and-Found office. In Bad Air Day, Flamingo is set upon fulfilling his destiny to become a star, if only he can avoid the evil swans and Claws and Paws – the park’s stray cats. In Mission Un-Poppable the five friends have to thwart evil Avocadon’t’s plans to take over the water park.
Kids are going to love these light-hearted books that are bursting with laugh-out-loud humour. The graphic novel format makes them really accessible and appealing and the characters (especially the permanently unimpressed Lynn) are just brilliant.
