The Adventures of Pinocchio is another stunning addition to the MinaLima Classics series. Children can enjoy the full unabridged story of the little wooden puppet who longs to become a real boy. This hardback book has been produced to an extremely high standard: a gold-foiled cover, luxurious paper and intricate pop-ups.
However, it’s the sumptuous illustrations which really set this edition of Pinocchio apart. The book is illustrated in spectacular fashion by MinaLima Design, the award-winning graphic design studio founded by Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima. They are best-known for their ten-year involvement in the Harry Potter film franchise, where they established the visual graphic style of the film series. With The Adventures of Pinocchio they have used their design skills to reimagine a classic of children’s literature.
Each of the 36 chapters of The Adventures of Pinocchio has an exquisite full-colour, double-page chapter header with a theatre backdrop. The colourful illustrations continue throughout the book; nearly every double page is illustrated. Their style maintains a traditional feel and reminds me of woodcut illustrations.
The book is beautifully designed and includes many fabulous interactive elements. One of my favourites is the hinged Pinocchio puppet whose nose grows! A later page in the book has clothes that you can cut out (if you can bear to!). The clothes come with little tabs allowing you to dress your puppet. This has a lovely retro feel and reminds me of the cardboard dress up dolls that I played with as a child.
There are also various finger puppets to cut out and a small pop-up theatre where you can use them to put on a puppet show. The book’s amazing pop-ups are elaborate and inventive and lots of fun.
This gorgeous, original edition of Pinocchio is certainly one to treasure!
