There are a lot of counting books on the market but One Fox, by début author and illustrator Kate Read, is already up there with the best. The story is told in the style of a thriller and this takes things up a gear.
The tale begins with one hungry fox.
Silently and stealthily, he creeps up on three unsuspecting hens. Chaos ensues.
One Fox is such a gorgeous book! I love Kate’s use of striking colours and bold character-driven illustrations. There’s so much tension and drama in the pictures; it’s a really exciting book. Kate’s deeply layered images, which are a mixture of collage, printing and drawing, give her illustrations a lovely rich texture.
One Fox shows numbers in text and numerals and there’s something different to count on each page; it’s a great way to learn to count to ten. There’s even a neat twist at the end.
