A Surprise For Tiny Mouse by Petr Horáček

Published by Walker Books, 2014.

Tiny Mouse loves to be out and about in all sorts of weather – sunshine, wind, frost and snow. However, she does not like the rain and runs away to hide.

This is a beautiful book. Petr Horácêk’s illustrations are exquisitely textured and a joy to look at.

The book is very cleverly designed too; some of the pages have been cut away to great effect. On the first page, you can stroke the curve of Tiny Mouse’s back. Other pages have a hole cut out of them and this gives you a glimpse of the page behind. Through the hole, the moon glistens in the night sky, the sun shines on the snow and TIny Mouse peeks out from behind the grass.

The richness of the vocabulary is a treat too. It’s fun to read about crackly leaves, crunchy frost, splashy rain and snowflakes that tickle.

This is a turn the wheel board book and, on the final page, Tiny Mouse gets to enjoy the surprise of the title – a beautiful rainbow. Your child can turn the wheel to magically reveal it.
