This sturdy board book is perfect for little hands – it’s just the right size for them to hold and resilient enough to survive even the most enthusiastic baby! The rounded page corners make it baby friendly too.

There are no words. Instead there are six double pages, each featuring a different animal and a pattern. The pattern echoes some aspect of the animal picture – the dog’s spots, the flower the cow has in her mouth, the bunny rabbit’s bow tie – and keeps to the same colour palette. The book, as you’d expect from the title, is mainly in black and white. This is because a baby’s developing eyesight responds in particular to high-contrast images, such as these, that are black and white with sharp outlines. Each page also has a touch of detail in one other colour.  I read this book with my son and the striking images certainly caught his attention. As soon as we’d finished, he wanted to read it again. We’ve read it lots of times since; it’s a very popular addition to baby Sam’s bookshelf.
