History FACTopia! by Paige Towler & Andy Smith

Published by Britannica Books, an imprint of What on Earth Books, 2023.

History FACTopia! is the fifth title in the best-selling FACTopia! series. This time we’re taken on a fascinating and hilarious journey through global history. Facts are varied and topics wide-ranging: from Ancient Roman hair dye made from rotten leeches and vinegar to the first selfie (taken in 1839) and everywhere in between. The book features a wonderfully broad spectrum of cultures, civilisations, peoples and places.

It’s a book you can open on any page and dip in and out of as the mood takes you. The 400 facts (all of which are verified by Encyclopaedia Britannica) are bite-sized and pitched perfectly at a young audience. The witty illustrations are also really appealing and make the book even more accessible and engaging.

I love how the facts are all interconnected and that you follow a winding trail of facts throughout the book. The trail branches off at certain points and you can choose to go off on a different track if you wish. This gives the book a “choose your own adventure” vibe which I thought was really cool.
