My Mum is a Lioness by Swapna Haddow & Dapo Adeola

Published by Macmillan Children’s Books, 2022.

My Mum is a Lioness is the second picture book collaboration between Swapna Haddow and Dapo Adeola. They previously wrote and illustrated the fabulous My Dad is a Grizzly Bear.

We’re back with the same family again, only this time the focus is on mom. The story is narrated by the young son of the family who imagines his mom to be a lioness. He describes how she chases and pounces, roars loudly in enthusiastic support at school shows or from the sidelines of a football match, and mom even declares the baby of the family cute enough to gobble up.

The book is lighthearted and fun and very relatable, depicting familiar scenes of family life. It shows the many roles of a mom and would make a lovely gift for Mother’s Day.

The colourful illustrations are bold and vibrant and full of humour. My favourite double page spread shows mom and her pride running through the park doing buggy-fit!

The book ends poised for a third story. Next time little sister will be the star and I can’t wait to see which wild animal she’ll be!
