Snowy White by Gareth P. Jones & Loretta Schauer

Published by Farshore, 2022.

I love a twist on a fairy tale and this re-working of Snow White by Gareth P. Jones and Loretta Schauer is lots of fun.

Kingsley is the finest cat in the kingdom. How does he know? His crystal ball tells him so! But one day, the crystal ball has a different story to tell. A new cat by the name of Snowy White has arrived in the kingdom. She’s beautiful… she’s kind… and Kingsley is determined to get rid of her.

Instead of the seven dwarves, Snowy White meets seven mice on a mission. A mission to keep their neighbourhood clean and tidy. They have their work cut out since vain Kingsley and his pals are always preening themselves and parading up and down with little regard for the mess they create in the process. Snowy White soon mucks in and lends a paw and, in so doing, gets her fur matted and filthy. Yet still the crystal ball declares her the finest cat of all.

I liked the book’s light-hearted messages about jealousy and looking beyond someone’s appearance to appreciate character and deeds instead. The artwork is bold and humorous with a cast of charismatic cats and super cute mice. I’m a big fan of the all-knowing goldfish too.

Snowy White is the third in a fun-filled fairytale series. Gareth and Loretta have previously updated Rapunzel and Cinderella.
