A Day in the Life of a Poo, a Gnu and You by Mike Barfield & Jess Bradley

Published by Buster Books, an imprint of Michael O’Mara Books, 2020.

Described as a laugh-out-loud guide to life on Earth, A Day in the Life of a Poo, a Gnu and You is a hilariously funny fact book. The information is presented in a really engaging and accessible comic book format and the fascinating content will really appeal to kids.

The book is divided into three sections: the human body, the animal kingdom, and Earth and science. You’ll meet your grumpy liver who has to do practically EVERYTHING, the colossal squid with a brain the shape of a doughnut, and phytoplankton – the pick ‘n’ mix of the sea. The book’s scope is really broad and focuses on everything from the microscopic to the gigantic.

I love the look of the book. The layout is clean and attractive, the brilliant illustrations are witty and in full colour, and the balance between text and image is spot on.

There are so many facts about poo – children won’t believe their luck! From the full page of diagrams and descriptive captions of different types of human poo (smooth sausage, soft blobs, mushy stuff…) to the sloth’s giant weekly poo (one-third of its body weight) and the panda who poos up to 50 times a day, children who love a bit of toilet humour will be in their element.

I predict this will be the non-fiction hit of the year in my classroom!
