You’re Called What?! is a brilliantly funny picture book. My three-year-old and I have shared lots of laughs reading it together. The humour – silly names – is pitched perfectly for its audience.
The story is set at the Ministry of Silly Animal Names. There are long queues of animals who are fed up of their ridiculous names and wish to change them. With each turn of the page, there’s a different animal with a laugh out loud funny name. From the Cockapoo and the Blue-Footed Booby to the Bone-Eating Snot Flower Worm, you will not believe these crazy names. Some of them, like the Monkeyface Prickleback and the Tasselled Wobbegong, are an absolute delight to say out loud. Others like the Fried Egg Jellyfish and Ice Cream Cone Worm make you marvel at the natural world.
Just in case you were in any doubt as to whether these animals really do exist, the final two pages have photos of each of the animals and there are mini fact files too. Amazing!
Nikki Dyson’s fabulous illustrations perfectly accompany Kes Gray’s humorous story. The exasperated animals are wonderfully expressive and when they collapse into fits of giggles you can’t help but laugh too.

That is super cool. The blue-footed booby makes me laugh, too.
