You’re Snug With Me is a stunningly original picture book. The exquisite illustrations, inspired by Indian art, are like nothing I’ve seen before. The beautifully detailed patterns which make up each image are extraordinary and every page is a work of art.
The book is set in the Arctic. The pages are filled with vast frozen landscapes, an ocean teeming with life, delicate snowflakes, sparkling icicles, and the magnificent Northern Lights.
The story focuses on a mother polar bear and her two newborn cubs. They are born in the depths of winter and to begin with they know nothing but the frozen den that their mother has built for them. They question her about what lies beyond their tiny home and she teaches them all about the world. When spring arrives, they are ready to take their first faltering steps outside. This is a heartwarming tale with strong themes of family and maternal love. The mother polar bear’s refrain of ‘You’re snug with me’ reassures her cubs and it also reminds the child sharing the book with a loved one of how cherished and safe they are too.
You’re Snug With Me also has a powerful environmental message. The book cautions against greed and waste; Mama Bear teaches her cubs that, although they are the biggest creatures on the ice, they should only ever take what they need. The book also highlights the risks of melting ice caps.
You’re Snug With Me is a tender and comforting book with a thought-provoking message of environmental responsibility at its heart. One to treasure.
