Matt Robertson’s debut picture book is a delight. Super Stan is about two brothers – baby Stan and his older brother Jack. Stan is a super baby with super powers. Jack is always being outdone by Stan and Jack is getting fed up of being in his younger brother’s shadow.
Everywhere they go, Stan is the centre of attention; the whole world thinks he’s super. Jack’s birthday treat is a trip to the zoo and he longs for the day just to be about him for a change. However, in no time at all, Stan is showing off and drawing crowds of admiring onlookers.
Then, an unexpected disaster strikes and this time it’s up to Jack to save the day.
The illustrations are gorgeous, beautifully detailed and very often humorous. Matt Robertson has used lovely warm autumnal tones which I really like. I especially love the double pages where the action is split into four panels. The sequence where Stan wrestles a lion is my absolute favourite.
Super Stan is great fun to read and a perfect way to explore sibling rivalry and family relationships.
