On a school trip to Parliament, Suhana, Mia and Ayaan are mysteriously transported back to 1911! Finding themselves in the middle of a women’s suffrage demonstration, they are amazed to see people from all over the world taking part. Suhana wants to explore but Mia and Ayaan are anxious to get back. Then they lose each other… Will they be able to return to the present without changing the course of history forever?
Time Travellers: Adventure Calling is the first book in an exciting adventure series exploring shared British history and introducing young readers to different time periods and important people in history.
I really enjoyed the book. It’s an engaging story which is packed with fascinating historical detail. It succeeds in bringing history alive in an accessible way for young readers. We are introduced to key figures in the women’s suffrage movement, including less well-known suffragettes such as Lolita Roy and Princess Sophia Duleep Singh. We learn about their actions and the key dates in the struggle for the vote. I was interested to learn the distinction between suffragettes and suffragists (the latter being peaceful protestors) and discover that there were different branches to the suffrage movement.
I also enjoyed comparisons with contemporary protests about climate change.
Importantly, the book opens the way for discussions about lack of representation and the silencing of voices in history. Suhana and Ayaan are both surprised to meet people who look like them in 1911 London. They had no idea that anyone with brown skin lived in London at that time or that there had been British Indian women involved in the suffrage movement.
The book ends with Suhana, Mia and Ayaan poised for more adventures and I’m excited to see where they will travel back in time to next.
