Diamond Jack is a thrilling historical adventure, jam-packed with danger and excitement.
While helping in her grandpa’s magical emporium, Bramble unearths a curious scarlet mask. A tingling in her fingers tells her to try it on but, when she does, she can’t take it off… And when she looks in the mirror, none other than Diamond Jack (the notorious highwayman who’s missing, presumed dead) is staring back at her in place of her own reflection. It seems Bramble has been chosen for a mission. Time to stand and deliver!
The story hurtles along at a fast pace and there’s one unexpected twist after another. It’s a really fun read that I know children will enjoy.
There are strong messages about standing up for what’s right and protecting the more vulnerable in society, alongside themes of loyalty and friendship. The child characters at the centre of the story are immensely likeable: brave and full of spark and energy – a special shout-out goes to the wonderfully flamboyant Ernest! There’s plenty here for readers to relate and warm to.
I loved the book’s clear historical setting and sense of time and place: the wild moors; carriages held-up by moonlight; and unsavoury characters in equally seedy taverns.
So hold on to your hats, ready your steed and saddle up for an adventure with Bram and her friends.
